San Quentin Rehabilitation Center

Location: San Quentin, CA
Contract Amount: $25+ M
General Contractor: McCarthy Building Companies

Description: San Quentin, the oldest prison in California, is transforming from a maximum-security prison to a rehabilitation center. This project is the first of its kind in the United States.

The campus will include three new buildings totaling 80,000 sq ft. which will house: 28 classrooms, a library, recording studios, video production studios, broadcasting studios, podcast studios, a cafeteria, and outdoor learning spaces. The electrical scope includes a new 12KV unit substation tied into the campus medium voltage system and an emergency generator and ATS’s dedicated to the new facility. Extensive make—ready work was required to prepare the site for the new buildings including relocating the main fiber backbone serving the entire prison campus.

The goal is to provide incarcerated people better access to resources and provide them with the skills they need on their path to successfully re-enter society.

This groundbreaking change is following the lead of countries like Norway where prisons focus on rehabilitation. More information on this project can be found here: Report to Transform San Quentin Submitted to CDCR – News Releases
